Purpose and Rhetoric

Directions: after our discussion on Purpose and rhetorical effectiveness on Monday, write a 200 word or less description of the purpose of your essay. What is it that you want your audience to get out of your paper? What new ideas should they have about your topic once you have completed your argument? What is it that you want them to think, feel, and believe by the time they have finished reading your essay?

Due before class on Wednesday, October 15th.

Reply to Classmate: ask a question of clarification about your classmate's purpose. If you understand the purpose, ask a question of your classmate that might provoke deeper thought about the purpose and/or topic.

  1. My paper is going to focus on employment outcomes for disabled youth. I originally thought that the opportunities were pretty slim to have financial independence and equal opportunities in employment with disabled youth, but I am actually writing my paper completely differently. My argument is that disabled youth has increased opportunity for employment if the student is engaged in successful community centered transition programs. Being engaged in these programs also increases their ability to be financially independent, and ultimately have more opportunity to achieve the "American Dream". I want people to see that without these programs being implemented correctly, there are even larger barriers for employment of disabled youth. I want the audience to see the facts that disabled youths are being hired on at a significantly less rate than other youths in the same age range. I want people to understand how not only these programs but community interactions and participation also play a major role in the success of the individual.

    1. In regards to the purpose of your topic, why did you choose this topic? Is there something specific about this topic that you are passionate about? Are these programs solely funded by the government or are there third party businesses to provide these opportunities for disabled youth that are ran by individuals?

    2. I kind of randomly stumbled upon my topic. I wanted to write something that was being talked about, and employment has been a hot topic. I also know how getting a good job can be tough for all of us, but I wanted to see how is was for disabled youth. That is a great point. There are both community and government programs. The community based ones seems to be the most successful though. So it is a good mix of government funded and privately funded.

  2. My paper is going to focus on the health benefits of consuming alcoholic beverages when it’s done in moderation. Originally I was going to focus solely on beer, but found that to be a little too narrow. While conducting my research, I discovered that moderate alcohol consumption has a very positive effect on reducing some major health concerns. Of course drinking in large quantities has negative effects that we all are well aware of at this point, but I want to make people aware of the positive benefits that drinking has on health if they slow it down or just drink in small quantities.

    1. Who exactly is your audience? Is it the general public over the legal drinking age, specifically those that have health concerns that beer can help, or a different group of people? I think by knowing exactly who you want to make your argument to in your paper it'll help you streamline your paper with more powerful facts and be more convincing.

    2. My audience is pretty much the general public and those that have conditions that drinking might help to improve. Mine is more of a general awareness piece.

  3. The purpose of my essay is to inform the audience of the effects of sexual assault on the growth and development of adolescent females. Though many people may be aware of the fact that sexual assault is an issue, they may not know the possible outcomes and how it is affecting the youth. My intended audience is most likely affected youth themselves and/or their family members and friends, therefore I hope to inform them to better understand the victims. It is nearly impossible to understand something you have never experienced before, therefore with the help of my essay I hope to make it possible for families and other support systems to help their beloved ones who have personally been assaulted by having a better understanding of the overall concept and its unfortunate effects. With the use of pathos I hope to evoke emotion of the audience and understand that even though these victims are young when they are attacked, it causes life-long problems that may be nearly impossible to eliminate.

    1. Is there something you wish to be accomplished by informing the youth and their families? I am happy to see that you are striving to let this be noticed, but would this be an issue that you would like to also inform the police about so they as well can be on the look out for these predators?

    2. It might be interesting to include males in your paper. Both genders are assaulted yet there seems to be a bias towards males, perhaps because it's not discussed.

  4. My essay is about the criminalization of the homeless through the use of anti-homeless laws. Though the subject I choose has been done before. After reading more about my topic I found that some anti-homeless laws were helpful towards the homeless, yet the majority hindered them from getting any support or assistance. I want my audience (lawmakers, city council and the general public) to get a better understanding of how certain aspects of these laws not only cause cruelty and injustice in the population but effects not only those with no residence, but any person who wishes to assist the homeless population. I want my audience to think, feel and believe that anti-homeless laws need to be removed when it comes to dealing with the homeless. I want to convey to my audience that by creating a new plan they can better assist the homeless and society as a whole.

  5. I want my audience to see the benefits of having relationships between an adopted child and his/ her birth family. I want them to open up their minds and hearts when it comes to such contact and try it. The new ideas that they should have about my topic include the benefits of the contact I have stated, and that such contact takes patience and hard work but can be very rewarding. I want my audience to think of the benefits, feel led to encourage contact, and believe that an adoptive child’s growth is very heavily influenced by a healthy relationship with his/ her birth family.

    1. This seems like this would be a tough argument to prove. Are you having success finding your sources and everything? The only reason I believe this might be a hard paper to write is the face that the results very so much from situation to situation. I bet there are common themes and ties in every situation that you might be able to use even if the results are different. Do you have a personal tie to your argument. I think this could be a great paper, it all depends on those resources you can collect

  7. My purpose of my paper is to inform everyone that women discrimination/profiling is still around as well as examples of it through researched evidence. Women have struggled for centuries on trying to get more rights and it's sad that today, the government as well as the people doing the hiring are still showing signs of women discrimination/profiling. This is something I want the women as well as men in the workforce that this is a problem that still needs to be fixed. By the time my audience is done reading my essay I want them to feel informed about this problem.

    1. I'm writing something similar pertaining to women in combat. Recently I read a headline that the courts voted against a law that would force companies to pay men and women equally. Will you offer any solutions that would facilitate a pattern of change?

  8. The purpose of my paper is to affect policy change in the military regarding women in combat positions. There is a huge gap between what women do in battle versus what men and women believe or accept. Even though the order allowing women in combat positions is in effect, there is an antiquated training system that promotes the belief that women are too weak and incompetent to perform combat duties. I want to convey the accomplishments of female soldiers as efficient, strong, and dedicated to their mission and dispel the idea that women are physically inferior therefore should not be accepted or recognized as a fighting force. The outcome that I'm hoping for is that there is recognition within the military that the language and current training damages the relationship to equal opportunity and gender equality, therefore must be changed for the benefit of it's troops, mission and the nation.

    1. Are you going to show that women are not inferior, or that women can, in fact, be superior to men in combat situations? Equal opportunity is huge in our country, but is it not that the military will pick the best candidate for the job? How can you really remove the stereotype of men being physically, and maybe mentally superior?

    2. Sadly the military does not pick the best person for any job. It's based on rank and if that position needs to be filled by that particular rank, which often doesn't translate to an experienced person. The equality is based on more than just physical. Yes, men biologically have more upper body strength than women, however combat positions are not all based on brute strength. As far as mentally it is dependent on the person. Both men and women come home from combat with some form of PTSD and both successfully complete the mission under fire.

  9. The purpose of my essay is to prove that children who know right from wrong should be held accountable for their own actions, and not the parents. I want my audience to see that although parents are responsible for teaching their kids right from wrong, they can only do so much to insure that they are doing what they are supposed to do. I'm not exactly sure of how I want them to feel after they finish my essay. I'm still working on that appeal

    1. So how are you going to establish children actually knowing right from wrong? Is it age, maturity, or something else? And how could that be shown in court, where this topic would take place?

    2. If the child doesn't know right from wrong and the parents did nothing to discipline the child then wouldn't both be held accountable for the child's actions?

    3. If a child does not know right from wrong and the parent lies about having thought the child. Should both parties be held accountable?

    4. What about outside f home like school? What would the parents do to know their child will be okay when they are out at school or with their friends?

  10. I’ve been trying to change my purpose a fair amount lately, but I think I am going to stick to informing about alternative education and attempting to clear stereotypes. Specifically towards people who are against alternative education and think that it makes public schools worse for students. So in essence I want to focus on the benefits of charter schools not only for students who go to them, but for other schools, the economy, and the educational system as a whole. I want my audience to think that charter schools are not a waste, but a possible solution for educational reform. I want the audience to better understand charter schools and have a good overall viewpoint on them. I am having trouble figuring out the specifics of what and how I am to argue, but my general purpose should remain the same. I basically want to remove the ignorant beliefs of others on the subject.

  11. My paper is to convince that the society is being treated unfairly due to racism. There have been incidents that show that day by day, the society is getting worse than it was before. I want to show my audience evidence that will prove them that we need to change for the better. People don’t realize what they are they are doing. I got a better understanding how I am supposed to persuade my audience.
